Our lead case report, “Iatrogenic Papilledema Secondary to Leuprolide Acetate in a Patient Preparing for Hysterectomy,” by Alyssa Lancaster, OD, FAAO and colleagues, highlights an uncommon but important potential ocular adverse effect of leuprolide acetate. The case emphasizes the importance of recognizing papilledema, carefully reviewing a patient’s systemic and medication history, and maintaining a high index of suspicion when optic nerve edema develops in a patient with previously documented pseudopapilledema. With the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists in a variety of clinical settings, this report provides an important reminder that medication history can be critical in identifying the underlying cause of optic nerve head edema.
Our second case report, “Novel Use of a Variable Neutral-Density Filter in Vision Therapy for Exotropia with Deep Suppression,” by Chak Yin Charles Li, OD, explores an innovative application of a variable neutral-density filter in the management of a patient with intermittent exotropia and significant suppression. The case demonstrates how gradual reduction of luminance to the dominant eye may help facilitate binocular participation while providing a continuous method for assessing suppression.
Our Point-Counterpoint this quarter, authored by Erika Anderion, OD, FAAO and Kensington Hatcher, OD, FAAO, FORS, explores the role of AREDS2 supplementation in established geographic atrophy.
As always, Drs. Drew Rixon and Eddie Chu contribute insightful Journal Scans, highlighting important findings from recent studies and translating the literature into practical clinical takeaways.
